Muay Thai: A Passion for Jabbing

If you’ve never heard of Muay Thai before, you’re probably living in a cave devoid of any societal contact. This particular sport has been a reigning ‘it’ sport in recent years. People love it for its heart-pumping, sweat-inducing, endorphin-generating jabs, straights, elbows, knees, and kicks. I got introduced to Muay Thai when I came back from Los Angeles 3 years ago. FOB (fresh off the boat) and clique-less, the sport became a favorite pastime. When I felt the arduous torment of parental supervision and newly-administered curfews, Muay Thai let me unleash all my pent-up frustration and grievance. So I’ve frequented several Muay Thai camps and even hired private instructors since I started, and I can recommend two of my favorite Muay Thai camps to try out this particular fat-burner. (Note: I recommend that everyone acquire 1 set of hand wrap for own use. The gloves can come later. And no sports shoes required during the exercise.) West Jakarta: EVOLUTION MUAY THAI CAMP This camp is huge! The coolest part is, de facto, a boxing rink …

Pilates 101: Basic Exercises

In my last post on the challenge of new-age sport pilates, I gloated slightly about firmer abs and better fitting jeans post 2 months of pilates, which by the way did not come easy. No pain, no gain, right? Now, I want to share with you several basic Pilates exercises and poses, each targeted to work on a particular area. The Back Split Gives our thighs a good stretch. The balancing act makes us use our core muscles. Watch out, don’t fall! The Snake Freakin’ tiring! Have to tuck in the belly, stick out the butt, and support our weight with our arms. The Elephant That kooky chair had me fearing for my life once. I’m innately afraid I might be flung off to the wall while up on that chair. The Tree It’s like going upside-down with the barrel as the …

The Challenge of New-Age Sport Pilates

There is a whole realm of new-age (“nouvelle”) sports beyond running on treadmills and lifting weights these days. People are embracing the likes of TRX, anti-gravity yoga, ballet, Thai-boxing, Pilates, Zumba, pole dancing, and so on. Good news for fitness-junkies! I am not one per se, but I endorse novelty. This is why I chose to experiment with one of these new-age sports myself – pilates! Yes, we all know Pilates corrects our bad postures and relieves the back and spine, but does it give us Hollywood-worthy abs and curves? Based on numerous testimonials by friends, it seems to do the job. So I went on a frenzy searching for a good establishment to learn the sport. There are a number of facilities in Kemang and Gunawarman area, but going there would be hellish during peak hours. Imagine my glee when I discovered Benefit Pilates!  Benefit Pilates is a relatively new Stott Pilates establishment which I discovered online. Their facility is located at the somewhat-obscure Bellezza Shopping Arcade, which is close by to my house …
