Halloween Costume Shops in Jakarta

The origins of Halloween date back to the ancient Celts who lived 2,000 years ago in the land that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Northern France. Celebrating their new year on November 1, the ancient Celts recognized October 31 as the end of summer and the start of the cold winter, a time often associated with human death. In the second half of the nineteenth century, the Halloween tradition was brought to American by immigrants and over the years, has become more about neighborly get-togethers and less about ghosts and evil spirits. If the ancient Celts were to witness what Halloween has evolved to be here—basically drinking and if you’re lucky, sex—wonder what they’d say… But I’m not here to judge. I’ve had fun memories of Halloween over the years. Although alcohol is optionally preferable, dressing up in a costume is a must! Here’s a list of costume shops in Jakarta you may find useful. In A Beat “Still Naked” Campaign Photoshoot

Last Saturday I got to be a part of an amazing group of girls who are pushing boundaries and norms of beauty by way of their chic clothing line: In a Beat. Fashion is their way of saying women should not follow and be judged by the societal definition of Miss “It”. They believe it is their prerogative, as women, to be proud, sensual, carefree, and even a tad vain, because we are all stars in our own way. In a Beat’s vision is to curate women’s clothing with three key characteristics they will never forsake from the line: charming, comfortable, and effortless. Their dream is to cater to women of all styles, ages, and sizes, and to build an interactive community for women to share their fashion tips, ideas, and trends. The “Still Naked” Campaign In a Beat’s current campaign is called “Still Naked” with the main theme being that it is not the clothes or brands that define women. Thus, I was photographed simply wearing a nude tank top and denim shorts.  In a Beat girls …

Fashion Xchange Grand Opening Fashion Show

April 5 was Grand Opening night of Fashion Xchange, a new fashion store at EX Plaza Indonesia. The highlight of the opening night was the fashion show, featuring many indie local brands including WYLE {read: while}, a new Indonesian RTW brand by Yolana Limman, showcasing a whole line of whimsical, social, ready-to-wear dresses with a touch of edgy-ness. Infused by Yolana’s quirkiness and personal style, the name WYLE carries Yolana’s initials “YL” in it. The label showcased 6 different looks, each of which was modeled by Anggita Soehoed, Dian Silvani Pradana, Natashya Valentine, Selina Limman, and me. Following the walk was a cocktail party with music by DJ Mikey Moran. Getting hair and makeup done always takes longer than you think and want. The mega falsies I had on were so hefty I felt like I had 10 pounds on my eyelids. But the weight paid off–my eyes looked instantly 10 times larger.  The dress I sported was WYLE’s Woodspell Dress in a bold satin red color with black lace. The size I had on was XS …

Top 5 Beauty Picks This Spring

1. Dior Addict Lip Glow Ladies, if you have been scouring for a lip product that hydrates your lips and gives color, you’re definitely looking at the right place. Being a fickle person, this is probably one of the few lip products that I have used till the end of the stick, and repurchased! While most lip balms hydrate your lips, it does not give color and you end up taking that extra step to apply your favorite lipstick. On the other hand, I have never been a fan of most lip gloss as they tend to give that I-just-ate-fried-chicken-and-I-forgot-to-wipe-my-mouth oily look. The Dior Addict Lip Glow is the perfect balance between a lip balm and a lip gloss. It not only hydrates your lips and provides additional SPF benefits, it also adds a slight color to your lips. What is cool about the Dior Addict Lip Glow is that it creates a special shade that varies from person to person as it reacts with the chemistry of your lips. This results in a subtle color …

Kristien Blanko

The name Kristien Blanko may be a gentleman’s but the life behind this handmade shoe collection is the charming Trishia Pratt. Trishia, like most girls, and safe to say, any girl, has an eternal crush for shoes. But the thing that differentiates her and most other girls, she gets to stare and play with them all day! Her work involves making creative decisions on the styles and trends that find their way to production and adoption. Teaming up with her troop of designers and trend hunters, she tracks shoe trends all over the world, filtering and making a note of those she thinks are most loved. What’s not to love about this job? Kristien Blanko is originally an Italian shoe brand established in 1975 specializing in high-end women heels–platform, pump, wedge, kitten–and soon diversifying to more casual wear including flats. Blanko shoes are appropriate for work, cocktails, soirées, and even to admire in your closet. Design and variety wise, Blanko is very much up-to-date, carrying knock-offs of Laurents, Louboutins, and Olympias. For high heels, Blankos are sturdy, although …

Lilac Beauty Studio

The art of makeup has been around for a long time. Archaeological findings show that the use of cosmetics dates back to Ancient Egypt and Greece. As told in the Old Testament around 840BC, Jezebel, the Queen of Israel, was mentioned to have painted her eyelids. In fact, the word “cosmetics” originates from the Greek language, and means “technique of dress and ornament” and “skilled in ordering or arranging,” in essence, an emphasis on order and ornament. Last Sunday, I got to see Yuli in action who taught me a thing or two about makeup. The gorgeous 24-year old makeup artist and founder of Lilac Beauty Studio and a dear friend, needless to say, knows a whole lot about the technique of order and ornament. A creative at heart, Yuli expresses her art through beautifying people’s faces–those of friends, family, and clients, with whom she builds close, comfortable, and long lasting relationships. Being a girl, and a cosmetics consumer, I had so many questions for Yuli–her favorite products, whether to use a concealer before foundation …

Mandarin Peony: Charmed by Cheongsam

Jakarta is trending with young entrepreneurs and creative business ideas. Last Sunday, I sat down with two lovely fashion entrepreneurs who partnered in September 2012 and have since successfully glamorized girls all over Jakarta with their tasteful cheongsam. Apart from their common adoration for famed hunk Joseph Gordon-Levitt and obsession with beautiful fabrics and washes, these two fashionistas disagree on pretty much everything else. And that’s a good thing. The way they tell me, Angela is the girly one (there’s always one of those among us) while Cal has sports a more edgy style. While Angela tends to go more for lighter, softer, and pastel colors, Cal has her eyes on bold and dramatic patterns. Even coming up with a brand name that both Cal and Angela could agree on wasn’t a walk in the park. But both knew they wanted to include elements of “oriental” and “peony” in it because peony—the flowers of riches and honor and the official national flower of China—symbolizes romance and prosperity and is regarded as an omen of good …
