Blue Monkey

If you’re not quite familiar with the Foundry 8 quarter, you may have passed by Blue Monkey without noticing it (housed on the second floor of Kei and Chopstix – open 24 hours).

Located within the same complex as Wilshire, just to the left of Empirica, Blue Monkey serves a medley of Western, mainly Italian, grub, to be enjoyed alongside its one-of-a-kind, unique cocktails concocted in-house by manager Yannick who is without question au courant with the latest trends in food.

But despite being well acquainted with the dining scene in Jakarta, he is not a big follower and is intent on making the most of his creative command to bring a little something different to each cup and plate served.

We were first entertained with two of the restaurant’s most favorite cocktails. While we chatted over our refreshing spirits, I began to notice the interior, a dimly lit space with lights that one would see in a park. It was subtle yet visible that their interior was intended to feel and appear like the outdoors. In addition to the main dining area, there is an additional, more private area with husky sofas, the perfect spot to get comfortable over drinks (preferably booze).

No Name (right) | 99K
Smirnoff Vodka Orange, raspberry and lemon juice, topped with a raspberry foam, served in a brandy glass.

Blue Monkey

Flaming Passion | 99K
Rum, passion fruit, lemon juice, Cointreau, served in an old-fashioned.

A sweet, refreshing one – perfect for a summertime BBQ (if and when I have one).

The half passion fruit is literally flamed with a torch,

then poured into the drink.

Glow Me (not on the menu; by special request only)
An awesome glow-in-the-dark cocktail.

Salmon Millefoglie | 89K
Raspberry vinegar sherbet, goat cheese, and pesto.

Lately I’ve avoided ordering smoked salmon and the like because they are often heavily salted. Thankfully, this salmon millefoglie (or mille-feuille) was an exception! The mélange of salmon and pesto is always wonderful, and added to that, some sweet and tangy raspberry sherbet, made for a fresh and unique appetizer.

Blue Monkey

Gotta make sure you pack a little bit of each element.

Prosciutto | 109K
Parma ham served with raspberry sherbet.

Prosciutto melon is one of those foods you either love or hate. I enjoyed the sherbet but not so much the prosciutto (it was probably the particular kind of prosciutto that had a slightly too gamey of an aroma for me). Another use of raspberry sherbet, but no melon in sight. Did they forget?

Mushroom Cream Soup with Truffle Oil Foam | 59K
A delicious and savory soup beautifully plated with a peaked foam and green dots!

Blue Monkey Burger | 79K
Wagyu Beef burger, lettuce, tomato, caramelized onion, pink sauce with homemade buns and Belgian fries.

Blue Monkey

Fries are served with edible flowers.

Blue Monkey

An extra juicy burger – solid patty, and extra juice from the tomatoes (perhaps less tomato would’ve made for a more husky burger?).

Blue Monkey

Pan-seared Barramundi | 109K
Served with mashed potato and paprika coulis.

Tasted fine except for one thing: the fish was barely seasoned, rendering it a tad bland (although I was glad it wasn’t excessively salted).

Blue Monkey

Half-meter Dessert Platter | 159K
An assortment of homemade desserts: ice cream, chocolate mousse (shaped like a mud cake), panna cotta,  a variety of bavarois including mango, strawberry, soursop, and edible flowers.

My absolute favorite pick of all! This sweet concoction is a must-try! Love the soursop and mango bavarois in particular. Especially enjoyable because none of them were too sweet – each was just sweet enough.

And finally, to close, we had a glass of whiskey mixed with chestnut liquor and espresso (another in-house made-by-request libation) – a bold choice from the sweet cocktails from earlier, but a must-try if you are whiskey drinker and happen to enjoy coffee.

The Blue Monkey experience was pleasant, we appreciated that they clearly put a lot of thought into creating a menu that was not your typical garden variety menu (there seemed to be a surprising focus on food as opposed to mere ambience). The next time you are at Blue Monkey, feel free to make a special request for a special cocktail and let them surprise you!

We went home happy and satiated. Thank you Yannick and Blue Monkey for a good time!
