A generous supply of fried chicken, fries, dipping sauce, a glass of iced tea (or beer), and good company–can you ever go wrong with that? At the freshly frying Chick-A-pow!, that’s just what you’ll get! Even better, they are frying chicken with local flavors including saos kacang, soto, sambal terasi, in addition to teriyaki, lemongrass, buttered jerk, and salt and pepper. Chick-A-Powers, you’re just short of rendang! If you’re reading this…perhaps you’ll consider my plea?
First off – getting there was quite a feat. Jakarta traffic on a Friday evening, need I say more? The address you most likely have is Jl. Kebon Jeruk Raya No. 25, which is what my friends and I had too. But that address belongs to a clinic, so if you’re headed to Chick-A-Pow using a GPS or GoogleMaps and you actually want to get there, use this address instead: Jl. Rawa Belong Raya No. 25, Jakarta Barat. Parking isn’t easy but a practical but illegal tip around Jakarta: park anywhere around the area SENSIBLY.
When you enter Chick-A-Pow, it’s a completely different feel from all the craziness going on outside. Serving up wings straight from their sizable trailer kitchen, this little takes me back to the good ol’ days in Austin, Texas where food trailer trucks run wild and staying laidback is a must! We ordered a bunch, a few bunches actually, of both the wings and tenders with ever flavor tested, and dipped in the Garlic Spinach Dip. As for beers and other booze–it’s BYOB.
The verdict–I’d go for the tenders more than the wings because they’re much crispier (crispy on the outside, tender on the inside). As for the flavors, my favorites were saos kacang, soto, buttered jerk, and lemongrass. The teriyaki was just so-so, while the salt and pepper was way too salty. The Original Pow Fries (skinny fries, thank heavens!) with added chili were complimentary to the chicken and the Garlic Spinach Dip made it all the more guilty, and merrier! The flavors were strong–there was a lot of it, and authentic–you can really taste the variety. The Friday we went was during their trial opening weekend, so it was pay what you want. Normally, 5 wings or 3 tenders would cost you 20K.
The Original Pow Fries with added chili. Loveeee skinny fries!
Iced Milk Tea and Iced Gingergrass
—The Pow special drink. I definitely recommend the Iced Gingergrass–it was a perfect cooling agent during and after the chicken and fries party in the mouth.
Last thing–Chick-A-Powers, please please please also consider having an eating contest at Chick-A-Pow! I can already name some serious eaters.
Before you go, don’t forget to give them a piece of your mind! Doodle on the very walls of Chick-A-Pow!
