Quality and taste trump ambience and atmosphere for me. Every time. I’d enjoy little of a beautifully and lavishly designed restaurant with detestable food. I go for the taste. Always. Not for how dim a place is lit, or how exotic a leather sofa on which my derriere is resting. But if a place serves great food and comes schemed with an admirable interior, that’s just a plus! And even though I don’t go crazy over how a dish looks, I command Nouvelle for its colorful, delightful, delicate, and almost-too-pretty-to-eat presentations.
Recently opened in November 2013, Nouvelle, although named a fine dining concept, is suitable for semi-formal, or even casual dining. The ambient feels clean and bright, and the high ceiling effects the grandeur of an open space. This diner would also be proper for meetings, gatherings, birthdays, or any other celebratory occasions.
The restaurant serves fresh homemade baguette with a side of butter–an appetizing way to start any meal! All dishes are thoughtfully and beautifully prepared, with a unique taste not quite like anything I’ve tasted. Escargots are served on a bed of truffled sweet corn (as opposed to the traditional deep-hole procelain). The pumpkin soup was the most pleasant surprise of all, especially for me who’s never been a fan of pumpkin soup, pumpkin pie, or anything pumpkin (except pumpkin carving during Halloween). The sweetness of the pumpkin was well rendered and didn’t come across too rich as to cause you to feel sick. Another plus: added texture from the crushed peanuts. It was quite a wonderful blend. And talk about color? Just look at the orange mixed in with the purple and green. A feast for the eyes and the camera.
Nouvelle Ice Tea | 38K
Flavored iced tea with lychee, lime, mint, and cherry.
Nouvelle’s special blend of iced tea–a sweet diversion from your usual lychee or peach tea. Give it a try!
Escargot Nouvelle | 85K
Truffled sweet corn, smock ham hock dashi nage, brioche.
Kabocha Pumpkin Bisque | 65K
Shimeji, hazelnut, crème fraîche.
Salmon Belly Tartare | 95K
Ikura, ginger, sesame, salmon skin cracklings.
Vichyssoise | 80K
Poached egg, potato, chorizo, chili, brioche.
A very rich stoup with my favorite part being the poached egg right in the center. If you’re into soup varities like mushroom soup, or any other creamy soups, give this a try.
Duck Aiguillette | 180K
Ibérico, poached fig, sweet potato beignet, hibachi mushroom, burnt orange jus.
Poached Wild Napoleon | 200K
Smoked ikura, water chestnut, radish, citrus dashi.
Filet Mignon | 310K
Spinach crème, shimeji, baby potato, shoyu bone marrow bordelaise.
The flavor was tasteful with a hint of smokiness, and the presentation dramatic! However, this particular cut was not as tender as I had expected.
Java Sea Bass | 145K
Wakame white onion, roasted squid dashi pearls.
Fish can be a risky option when dining out. But this one proved to be fresh, although it was a little too salty for my palate. But overall, delicious.
Red Claw Yabble Risotto | 160K
Scallop, caviar, white chocolate, basil essence.
Are you one of those who always opt for a risotto instead of pasta at Italian restaurants? Try this one and see what you think. I thought it was perfectly creamy and tasty.
Pear Lobster Tortellini | 180K
Prawn, carrot, peanut, togarashi, yuzu sabayon.
Another beautifully plated entrée. The texture and filling were flavorful, although the sauce and hence the entire dish was way sweet for my palate. It didn’t leave me wanting more.
Miso Chocolate Palet | 70K
Edible gold, peanut butter, popcorn, caramel ice cream.
First things first. For those of you who may be wondering, edible gold tastes like paper. I mean it doesn’t really taste like anything. Just kinda melts in your mouth, Like nothing. Correct me if I’m wrong. Perhaps you’d have to eat an entire meatball size of edible gold to actually appreciate its taste (if it had any)? This dessert was my favorite among the two–very rich, smooth but with texture from the wafers inside the chocolate bar and popcorn! If you’re crazy about caramel, have a go at this one.
Apple Mille Feuille | 65K
Apple bavarois, vanilla emulsion, honey granola, coconut ice cream.
This mille feuille isn’t my favorite mille feuille, although the ice cream and granola tasted bright refreshing. All in all, Nouvelle was a pleasant experience. I do suggest you start with an appetizer, followed by a main, and dessert. The portions are petite. For French fine dining in Jakarta, it’s also quite an affordable choice. I’d recommend this spot to you, enjoy!
