Here’s Plan B for you–in case you need one. Or make it your plan A and enjoy a variety of Spanish delicacies from tapas and pintxos to peallas to fideua. If you’ve never had Spanish food before, this is a great place to start. And if you already love it, it’s also a great place to tame those cravings. Spanish chef and owner Oskar Urzelai, a tireless traveler and kitchen man, cooks and prepares his food with a unique Basque touch, and of course, with love. Having worked as a chef all over the world including San Sebastián, Madrid, Seville, Cuba, Dominican Republic, and around Asia, he finally decided to make Jakarta his home.
Plan B serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner–perfect for a meeting or get-together with friends and family. The atmosphere is comfortably casual and the staff friendly, rendering a pleasant dining experience. One thing stood out for me: the ingredients tasted very fresh, imperative for a restaurant serving an array of seafood dishes. The generous chef Oskar was kind enough to share with us some of the restaurant favorites (see below), some of which he hand-prepared right at our table!
Some of my favorites include the “Gambas al Ajillo” or prawns sautéed with garlic and parsley, the squid ink paella, the creamy seafood rice stew (similar to the Italian risotto), the green peppers stuffed with prawn, and the beef tenderloin baguette. To me, the cooking was straightforward yet flavorful, thoughtful, and felt genuine (nothing pretentious). And price wise, I thought it was worth it, especially in comparison to other restaurants and Spanish restaurants of similar offering in town.
Uniquely decorated with newspaper clippings and stories, Plan B was designed around Chef Oskar’s dedication to recycling things. Its menu was inspired by his love for the food market. He believes the best ingredients, during any given season, are those you can find at your local market. Since little, Chef Oskar has kept himself busy in the kitchen, savoring its sounds and smells. Coming all the way from Deba, Spain, Chef Oskar wanted to bring a piece of his home and share it with food lovers in Jakarta. And when asked about why he chose “Plan B” as the name of his restaurant, Chef Oskar cheekily replied, “everyone always has a plan B.”
