Jakartans know what I’m talking about when I say it’s hard to get a good Mexican bite in the city. So few options to choose from, and none of them comes close to what I know to be Mexican. I’m no taco doctor and have never been to Mexico. I suppose the Mexican food I know is de facto American Mexican food. But I’m going to be stubborn and ignorant (until I travel to Mexico) anyway and declare that I haven’t been met with a decent Mexican bite in Jakarta…until Taco Local.
Tucked away among a row of shops and houses in a busy South Jakarta street, this hole-in-the wall totally reminds me of a hipster town where tacos run wild and bike shops run even wilder. Attached to a bike store, this tiny Bite Spot just screams Austin, Texas to me. The decor is a melange of woody, chalky, and a little bit of dirty. But it’s a fun place to be in–laidback, a no-need-to-impress-anyone-with-your-stiletto-or-bowtie kind of place, a place where the servers and everyone else mind their own business (what??).
Perhaps some of you wonder how I decide whether or not I like a Bite Spot. And even though most of you probably don’t care, I’m going to tell you anyway. The gavel is hit when I think I’d come back a second time. This Bite Visit to Taco Local was my second. So, yay! I know Mexican food isn’t really a favorite among many here, but my family, most of my friends, and I loooove it. Long story short, this Bite Spot comes closest to what I love about the gusto of Mexican cuisine, although the sizes are t-i-n-y (I’d order a double taco and a burrito for myself) and they could definitely go a little easier on the salt. So give it a bite, you just might agree with me. And if you don’t, we could absolutely have a debate about it! : -)
Chipotle corn, frijoles, salsa fresca, salsa verde, and pimento asada
–Love love love the corn and salsa altogether!
Chili con carne, fried egg, frijoles, cheese, salsa fresca, and mayonesa all sandwiched in a Bolillo bread.
–If you’re looking for a hearty one, this is one among the other bites.
Pulled beef, dirty rice, frijoles (beans) negro, salsa fresca, guacamole, and cheese.
Carrot and Apple Juice
–One of the most refreshing drinks I’ve had in a long time!
