Apple iPhone 5S

Over the last few years, Apple has set many new standards in the computing, technology, as well as mobile phone industries. Many people believe this to be the work of innovator and inventor Steve Jobs. Since Steve’s passing in late 2011, many have also started to doubt Apple’s ability to continue to be the industry standard. In fact, over the last year or so, it does look like Apple is following the trend of the market by releasing the iPhone 5 with a larger screen last year, and at the same time releasing the iPad Mini. As far as I recall, both of these products were ones Jobs specifically did not want to create, which is why I also believe that Apple may no longer be the industry standard.

So, why write about the iPhone 5S? Well because there are rumors of something potentially game-changing coming our way (maybe).

Camera – 12 Megapixels

Apple iPhone 5S

First, I’ll start with rumors that are somewhat solid. The iPhone 5S will have a 12-megapixel camera, which is a step up from its 8-megapixel predecessor on the iPhone 5. Not only will it increase in the quality of the images, but it will also help with low-light photography, a problem with cameras with small lenses, which is on just about all phones. No word about front camera though, but I would guess that it’ll either stay at 1.2 megapixels or get a slight upgrade to 2.0 megapixels.

Screen – Improved + Multiple Screen Sizes

Apple iPhone 5S

As with almost every iteration of the iPhone series, the screen resolution increases. This new phone is rumored to use a new display technology made out of IGZO (Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide) material.  IGZO has a higher resolution than the current iPhone 5, is slightly thinner, and brighter than the current iPhone screen. But the most exciting rumor about the iPhone screen is that Apple may be offering multiple sizes. If you haven’t noticed, most high-end smartphones today are bigger than the size of your hands. Not only does this make one-hand operation extremely difficult, but talking or taking pictures on a large thin flat piece of hardware looks utterly ridiculous. This is one of the reasons I’ve stuck with the 4S, because of its the perfect size. If Apple does indeed make multiple sizes with the same specs, I might consider upgrading to the 5S. To quote Will Shankin, a Senior mobile writer at Gizmag, “one size doesn’t alway fit all.”

Design – Anodized Colors

As far as its shell, the 5S is expected to carry on its design from the iPhone 5. However, there are signs that point to Apple’s releasing the 5S with more than two color options, similar to what they are doing with the current generation iPod touch.

Security – Fingerprint Scanning

Now THIS is the feature that I would love to have on my phone. It takes too long for me to enter either a 4-6 digit pin, or a picture lock, pattern lock, or whatever screen-type lock that is currently available. And as a result, I leave my phone unlocked with no security. It bothers me when I think about it but the alternative just slows me way down when I am in a hurry to access my phone. Unlocking via fingerprint shouldn’t take any longer than a regular “Slide to Unlock” as it should process and verify your fingerprint almost instantaneously. I have this feature on my ThinkPad X201 and it’s one of my most favorite things on it.

Operating System (iOS 7) and Others

Apple iPhone 5S

The iPhone 5S is rumored to be shipping with Apple’s redesigned iOS 7. From what I hear, it’s a radical redesign that will change the way we use iOS, and of course to compete with the feature-rich and high customizability of competitor Android. There are also rumors about Apple’s offering 128GB of storage space (for $100 more than the usual 64GB) and NFC support, both of which won’t mean much to most users, so I won’t get into the details.

Apple iPhone 5S

So, what do you think? Will it be a game-changing device? I guess we’ll find out in a few months when Apple releases the iPhone 5S in Summer of 2013. Of course there are others who think that Apple are only making incremental updates and charging a hefty premium for their products. But hey, everyone’s entitled to their opinion. As for me, I am excited about the potential of the new product, and looking forward to Apple’s announcements.
