Our Eleven House Rules

Living in a new place always feels like a fresh start. For R and me, moving into our first home together was a big deal. We love having our own space, especially since we renovated and designed it ourselves. And while we never officially sat down to go over rules of the house, there are several habits we try to follow that help keep our space clutter-free. 1. Keep countertops clear and clutter-free. Living in a limited space like an apartment, we’re compelled to be smart and creative about storage space. First, we didn’t bring absolutely everything we own to our new place, just things we would need and use on a regular basis. Second, we try to use up every nook and slot we can fit our stuff into, allowing for clear desk and countertops. 2. Put things back immediately. This applies to everything from the vacuum cleaner, mop, remote control, screwdriver, ladder to the pencil, pen, stapler, scissors, paper clips, and especially the ubiquitous eraser, rubber bands, and bobby pins. 3. Don’t let …

How to Stretch Shoes in under 5 Minutes

Happiness comes in many different forms. One of them: shoes. But what’s happy about not being able to fit into our favorite pumps? Nothing. Sadly, it happens. We outgrow them, our feet bloat, and there was a sale and we absolutely couldn’t pass up a good deal. Life is short. Buy the shoes. No? But hey, relax, we’ve got a super quick and easy way for you to fit into your heels (and flats) in just under 5 minutes. Note: this method works with shoes that are half to one size too small. Let’s get started! THINGS YOU WILL NEED: 1. Shoes that fit tight (half to one size too small) 2. Thick socks 3. Blowdryer Step 1: Wear a pair of thick socks. If one pair isn’t thick enough, wear two. Step 2: Wear your socks with the shoes. Step 3: Blow dry around the areas of the shoes that are tight, particularly around the front and side areas. Move your blowdryer across your shoes, being careful not to concentrate on one area for too long. …

TickTock Escape Room: Can You Escape?

They say a curious mind is a healthy mind. And, a healthy mind equals a happy mind. Today, our curiosity brought us to yet another escape game arena, the brand-new Tick Tock Escape Room in Alam Sutera, Serpong. When I first heard about it, I was fired up! Our last escape game experience at Escape Hunt Jakarta was a whole lot of fun, even though our efforts would have earned us no apprenticeship with Sherlock H. But today is a new day, and I was set on unriddling whatever came my way. And even though I showed up dressed in a mini polka dot dress, I meant business! TickTock’s three experiences included: The Mansion’s Heist, Asylum, and Murder at the Opera House. Knowing this wasn’t our first time, co-owners and dynamic duo Ronny and Silvia, offered us the bigger challenge: Murder at the Opera House. In 60 minutes, we were to solve a murder mystery and escape the room. We confidently accepted. 15 minutes into it, we asked for our first clue. Like always, I was reluctant …

Heirloom Galerie Exclusive Invitation and Promotion

Is your closet due for a revamping? Wishing you could trade in your old stuff with new frills? Dreaming of waking up to a completely retailored wardrobe? If you’re thinking yes, yes, and yes, chances are you are into, if not obsessed with, fashion. And we get you. Sometimes it feels like the world of designer handbags and shoes takes over. What starts out as innocent window-shopping turns into you-can’t-pass-up-on-a-good-bargain purchases. Those bags and shoes are literally dangled in front of our eyes, calling for us to adopt and take them home. But of course, unless you are Carrie Bradshaw, Rebecca Bloomwood, or impossibly married to the Duke of Cambridge (meaning your name begins with a “Kate” and ends with a “Middleton”), you probably can’t max out your (or your daddy’s or husband’s) credit card every time you “fall in love” with a shoe or bag. So, what do you do? What can you do? Calm down all you non-Bradshaws, non-Bloomwoods, and non-duchesses – Heirloom Galerie is here to refresh your collection without breaking your bank. At this luxury consignment shop, you can either drop off your pre-loved …

Escape Hunt Jakarta: Escape The Daily Grind!

No more excuses for the weekend. No more saying you’re out of ideas. No more unwilling tile-counting at the mall. Now, there’s something for everyone – Escape Hunt Jakarta is officially saving you from china-shopping with mom or turning into a full-time sofa spud. Let’s go back 100 years in time. You are a famed detective from London by the name of Shylock Holmes and you’ve been sent to old Batavia to solve a mystery – a murder perhaps, but that’s for you to figure out. Walking in to the waiting area, the place feels oddly serene and quiet, as if entering a spa, a contrast to the swarming outdoors. The decor is wood-consumed, with a mix of Batavian and European paraphernalia. After first filling out a sign-up sheet, we were briefed by one of the staff with full-on Sherlock costume about the mystery case assignment (kidnapping! I knew it!). There were 3 different scenes from which to choose – kidnapping in the study, murder in the kitchen, and something else in the bedroom. We were handed the …

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?

First of all, love the title of the book. You could just hear Mindy’s zippy voice, coupled with her signature somewhat sarcastic yet subtly confrontational facial expression, uttering those exact words. Mindy Kaling, who plays Mindy Lahari in The Mindy Project on FOX (now on season 2, yay!), is beyond hilarious, witty, snarky but in a kind way, and a girl you wish were your absolute BFFF. She is silly yet intelligent, quirky yet driven and focused. But what’s more, she is one hell of a writer. You know how they always say to find one’s unique voice and style in writing? Mindy’s the perfect outcome. This is a photo of Mindy (included in the book) as a little girl. Here’s what’s so lovely about Mindy. She is so far from what our culture (and Hollywood) would consider traditionally “pretty”, i.e. skinny, and you know the rest. She definitely doesn’t wear a size 0, nor does her hair always fall perfectly (although she would very likely debate about that). But why is she so funny and likeable? It becomes almost impossible and irrelevant to separate …

Ice Cream Fun Facts

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream. A famous comedic chant from the 1986 Jarmush drama “Down by Law” telling the story of three different men in a Louisiana prison and their journey. My point being, who doesn’t love ice cream?? Now, here are some fun facts you may or may not already know about this sweet thing. If you can eat it, you can certainly read about it! In case you were wondering what I’m talking about, here’s a clip of the three men singing about ice cream: Go ahead, sing along… Global Annual Ice Cream Consumption According to Datamonitor, by the year 2015 the global ice cream market is forecasted to be having a volume of 15.408 billion liters. an increase of about 15 percent since 2010. Project Glass

I’m sure by now you’ve heard of the Google Glass. If you haven’t, this revolutionary device is a pair of glasses you can put on your face, which gives you a little heads-up display (HUD) in the corner of your eye. It’s very much like Iron Man’s visor HUD except this one is not a targeting or exoskeleton armor monitoring system and doesn’t come with a friendly AI called Jarvis. It does however, come with a variety of Google Apps – apps that’ll let you socialize and share everything you see and year into your Google+ account, and possibly other social medias. You can choose to have prescription lenses (if you require them) or tinted lenses installed, or you can wear them like the Asian trend of wearing glasses with no glass. Ironic isn’t it, given its name? Curious how it feels to be wearing one? Chances are you don’t know anyone with one yet, so you won’t be able to try it personally. But Google’s published a few videos that’ll get you close to …
